Back around the year 2008 during the summer, there was a site called WiiCharged.com. It was basically a Nintendo user-community focused on the Wii, and you could exchange Friend Codes (FCs), have online battles/games, and talk about everything Nintendo or Wii related. I was once a member of the site, and on this site I made a few friends and just settled into the site and started to become used to it.
As time went on though, for a short period of time, the admin who went by the name A2xA, announced that he had no money to continue running the site and the community was such a dedicated community that everyone was sad the site was closing. One user by the name of mariofan went and created a free forum as a temporary home for WiiCharged and set it up nicely for the users to re-route to. The admin however then goes bad and causes havoc around the forums and his own site and community comes crashing down. Everyone then found themselves at the temporary residence for WiiCharged, and while it was coming to a drastic end, the members of the community held strong and had hope. I, by the username MiiKirby2766 decide to save the community.
Under this alias, I contact the admin himself as he calms down and apologizes after that chaos the happened, and offer to buy the website from him. However, this was impossible as the proper procedures could not be executed. So I take the liberty of getting permission from my mom to buy a new website called WiiPowered and bring the community of WiiCharged to their new home. On June 7th, 2008, WiiPowered was open to the public.
Activity at first was great. We all started fresh, tried to implement everything that WiiCharged had on WiiPowered and went from there. Most of the vital members of the WiiCharged community was saved, with some missing few, and WiiPowered was slowly growing. WiiPowered survived a whole year and even celebrated it’s first birthday in 2009. Everything was great and members were happy and the community was…well, I’ll get more into that.
After being 1 year old, the community became more and more…inactive. As 2009 rolled along, members became busy with real-life activities such as school, trips, and other things that are not done on the web. I also was becoming more involved with SMF coding and development. I started giving support to other users who have SMF forums and then eventually I join a development team to develop a portal mod called Dream Portal. This also caused me to move away from my own community and web site. Along with this journey that I was embarking, I also had school that I had to deal with, causing me to move more away from the community. Altogether, the activity rate of the site was declining rapidly. I even tried to re-start WiiPowered fresh as I had an upgrade of forum software from SMF 2.0 RC1.2 to SMF 2.0RC3 and take advantage of SMF’s new theme Curve. But even with that, activity didn’t raise at all. Daily posts were decreasing, member registration was decreasing, it was just so sad also that I myself wasn’t being active. None of my members were active, they hardly visited and were deemed busy. WiiPowered was also a victim of the Simple Machines Forums attacks where spam bots would enter random passwords for the many users on the site. Not to mention that spammers themselves would make accounts, somehow have their account activated and post spam advertisements. WiiPowered’s security was clearly outdated, the software was outdated, I just didn’t have time or inspiration to continue working on WiiPowered.
So with that note, activity on WiiPowered is pretty much a flat line, and being 3 years, 10 months, and 16 days old on this day this post was posted, it’s being closed for good. WiiPowered is actually what had me go into my SMF journey, so it changed my life, and the time that I have spent on my computer. I have downloaded the site’s files to my computer for archival purposes as I also used that as a learning site for PHP and MySQL, so I have a few “tools” that I coded in PHP. I’m also grabbing the database and having it be stored on my localhost. The domain WiiPowered.com might expire soon, probably when June 7th comes around. So everything on WiiPowered will be deleted and one page will be shown to say on the homepage that it is closed. WiiPowered has good memories that I treasure and value, and I will always remember the good times.
