Before Skype, I used Windows Live Messenger. That’s pretty much the only IM client that I had downloaded on my computer. I would only use these IM clients for personal uses to chat and connect with my friends, but after I got involved with more things, that extended beyond my personal real-life friends.
When I was in my SMF stage, I started to use Skype. It was how I stayed in touch with the people I would develop Dream Portal (portal modification for SMF) with, and many misc SMF friends that I made through SMF. This was when I mainly used Skype for SMF purposes, and was using Skype and Windows Live Messenger at the same time.
As time passed however, my activity on Windows Live Messenger decreased and slowly stopped using it and later I removed it completely from my computer. I stopped using it as my real-life friends also slowly stopped using it. Some of my friends still use it, but I don’t use it at all anymore. It was probably social networks such as Facebook and MySpace that made their use of the clients pretty inactive.
So having moved away from Windows Live Messenger, I have Skype now and still use it for SMF and personal uses, but only periodically would I use Skype. I mainly use Skype now to stay in touch with my girlfriend, but not much for other things since I wouldn’t be on all the time. My activity with SMF has drastically declined in March 2010 and the whole story on that, well yeah that’s another story. Might blog about it afterwards.
Skype is becoming increasingly popular as their user database keeps growing and growing. Skype does have its ups and downs when it comes to specific features, but it works. Skype is available for PC and Mac, so that makes talking to your friends who have Macs and PCs easier since with clients such as Windows Live Messenger are only on PCs, hence the word “windows” in its name.
